Have you ever felt discouraged during the process of getting out of debt? If so, you’re not alone.

Maybe things aren’t going as quickly as you’d like, or you’ve had some unexpected setbacks. I know I felt discouraged when that happened.

It can be hard to stick with the process or get back on the horse when you feel that way.

But when you’re committed to become debt-free, that’s exactly what you do anyway.

Notice what I said there? When you’re committed to becoming to be debt-free. Not if you want to become debt-free.

That one little word

That one little word – when versus if – makes all the difference. It means you’re committed, mentally and emotionally.

As Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington say in The 12 Week Year, “When we commit to something, we do things that we would not ordinarily do. The question of if goes away and the only question you ask is how.”

Once you committed, your point of view changes. It’s no longer a question of whether or not you can do something. You know you can – eventually – even if you’re not sure how yet. It’s just a matter of when, getting help when needed, and sticking to your commitment.

You have a vision, and it will come true when you’re committed.

On sticking with it

Feeling motivated and amped up about the idea of becoming debt-free definitely helps you to stick with things. But you want to know a little secret?

You don’t actually have to feel motivated. You have to be motivated.

What’s the difference?

Motivation the feeling is exciting. But actually being motivated is having a “why” that matters to you.

It’s doing the stuff need to do anyway, even if you don’t feel like it, because you know that by sticking with it and you will get to your goal.

Worth it

When you’re determined to get out of debt, you know that what you have to do to get there is worth it in the long run. You know that you will cross the finish line. You’re committed, and one day you will become debt-free.

So are you in?

Answer that question deep in your soul. Feel it, and then live it.

  1. I really like your distinction between being motivated and feeling motivated. Those are two different things and the feeling version typically wears off fairly quickly. To be successful, you’ve got to be willing to keep going, even when its hard and you don’t really feel like doing it!

  2. Remembering your why is so important. If you can remember why you want to do this, it will help keep you motivated. We also find it easier to stay motivated when we have our debt snowball up on the wall where we see it every day. It reminds us to keep going and it also shows us the end date. We know this won’t be forever.
